Public Citizen’s dataset includes information from President Trump’s 2015, 2016, and 2017 financial disclosure forms. The form, known as the 278e, is filed with the Office of Government Ethics (OGE). Public Citizen has combined data with new data obtained through various government websites.
We individually searched for the 562 business entities to find the jurisdiction, unique ID number, incorporation date, dissolution date, registered agent information, and any other information publically available.
The dataset provides a different view of the data. The data has typically been digitized into different sections – roughly five separate sections from each disclosure (part 1, part 2, part 2 Exhibit A, part 6, and part 8) for a total of 15 different sections over the three years. We combined all 15 sections into a single table.
Because of the challenge of converting .pdf documents into usable data, in some cases we relied on data that had been published by other organizations, with some adjustments, to fill in fields in our dataset. For the 2015 and 2016 “employment assets and income” section, and the “other assets and income” we used The Atlantic’s dataset. For the 2016 entity ownership section we used Quartz data. We fact checked each datapoint from these datasets.
